A group of children from a local primary school was invited to take part in a competition to come-up with a road name, for a development of homes, which will provide a firm foundation for 77 families in Llandudno.

ClwydAlyn, a North-Wales provider of affordable homes, invited a group of school children to take part in an exciting competition, to name a new road. The pupils at Ysgol Tudno, from years one to six, were asked to come up with potential names for a road on the new Builder Street development in Llandudno. Working closely with the school community, ClwydAlyn and contractor K&C Construction Ltd involved the students in creating a piece of history and inspiring pride in their local area. The children were offered information about the area’s past and the exciting homes which would be built. Then asked to think up road names which they felt would represent the area, and the community.

With so many excellent suggestions, picking a winner was tough. Eventually, after much deliberation, the winning road name, suggested by Dewi Jenkins in year 3, was announced; Llys yr Enfys (Rainbow Court)!

To thank Dewi for the winning suggestion, he received a certificate and some gift vouchers. John Jones, Development Project Manager from ClwydAlyn and Paul Russell, Project Manager from K&C Construction Ltd visited the school to present the prize and talk to the students about the site and its construction.

“We were so impressed with the street names suggested that it was very difficult for us to pick a winner! Congratulations to Dewi for his cheerful and colourful suggestion of Llys yr Enfys. We chose this name because it's wonderful and happy and it represents the shape of the road. And it sounds great in Welsh and English, as all good road names should!”

Across the world, a rainbow is a universal symbol of hope. Dewi’s road name perfectly sums up the hope and optimism that ClwydAlyn has for the futures of the families who will move into these homes.

“We are very proud that one of our learners has played an important part in the history of Llandudno. I am sure, now and into the future, Dewi and his family will treasure the fact that he has named a street within his local community – it will undoubtedly be a talking point for many a family gathering and school assembly!”

Celebrating Local Heritage

Celebrating the area’s local heritage, two other roads at the Builder Street development have been thoughtfully named after local figures who have shaped the community’s rich history.

Clos Glyn Griffiths has been named after a young sergeant pilot Glyn Griffiths from Llandudno. Aged just 24 he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal for his valiant service, flying Hawker Hurricanes in No.17 Squadron during the Battle of Britain in 1940. Councillor Angela O’ Grady came up with the suggestion that in honour of Sergeant Griffiths’ heroic war efforts, the street should be named after him.

The apartment building at the development, has been named in honour of the Rosa Hovey Charitable Trust and Housing Trust. The charity was established by Ethel Hovey in 1933, a pioneering figure in education and women’s welfare rights in North Wales and dedicated to her sister Rosa. The newly named apartment building, Llys

Rosa Hovey, pays tribute to the legacy of the Trust, symbolising the creation of safe, affordable homes and strong local communities.

Development Completion

The 77, high-quality, energy efficient homes will provide stable bases for local families, as well as independent living for people aged 55 or over. Staged completion is scheduled for 2026, when the roads will be handed over.
