ClwydAlyn, a North Wales Housing Association, helped to get the Llandudno-based independent living scheme, Tan y Fron, ready for its 10th anniversary with the aid of the housing association’s new volunteering project, DIY SAS.

The Sports and Social Committee (SAS) is ClwydAlyn’s staff-run volunteering group. In the past, they arranged events such as voucher draws for Easter and summer, photo competitions, fantasy football and resident and staff fun days. Looking to get more staff members involved with ClwydAlyn’s volunteering policy, the group created DIY SAS which launched in April, to give back to the housing association’s schemes and communities.

The first DIY SAS project took place on Saturday 18th May when a group of staff members spent the day at Tan y Fron. While there, they tidied up the communal garden, cut back shrubs, weeded, and trimmed plants that had overgrown, ready for its 10th-anniversary party taking place on Friday 14th June.

Other local companies also supported the project, including Law Construction who provided slate, Samco who donated gloves, and GE Tools who commissioned 50 hi-vis vests with the DIY SAS logo.

A massive thank you to the team that organised and volunteered on Saturday 18th May to spruce up our garden in Tan y Fron. This means so much to the staff and residents of Tan y Fron. The courtyard garden is the heart of Tan y Fron and it brings joy to all who live and work here. I know the volunteers also included family members of our staff and they need a special mention for giving up their time and energy for this volunteering project. The garden will be the venue for our 10-year anniversary on the 14th of June. All volunteers are cordially invited to this event.

I left Tan y Fron on Saturday with a huge smile on my face, knowing we have made a big difference to so many people’s lives. I know this goes a long way to our customers’ health and wellbeing, throughout the summer they will be able to enjoy all our hard work.

A massive thanks to all for attending and giving up your personal time to get the gardening project completed.

So far, the SAS have had 44 members of staff sign up to volunteer, we have also had staff sign up to give advice (on gardening). We are blown away by how many people want to get involved and improve the areas for our residents to enjoy. We hope now that we have completed one project, more staff will sign up and it will continue to grow.

The staff who have signed up to volunteer are signing up for the project that suits them and their availability, which is great. We have currently had nine project requests (including Tan y Fron) and we are excited to see the outcomes working in partnership with our grant funding and social value coordinator, Lois. A big ‘thank you’ goes out to our partners who have already donated items for us to use!
