Neuadd Maldwyn is an independent living development in Welshpool, featuring 66 one-and-two-bedroomed apartments. Residents who have been allocated one of the new apartments, went to visit their new homes for the first time recently and were treated to a look inside the considerately restored Neo-Georgian building.

During April and May residents will be moving into their new homes at independent living scheme, Neuadd Maldwyn. The unique development combines a sympathetic refurbishment with purpose-built apartments. The homes will offer a supportive environment for residents, with the opportunity to live alongside like-minded people and socialise in a community setting.

Residents were invited to tour the Neuadd Maldwyn complex and look around their new apartments, as well as the communal areas of the buildings which include a restaurant, and a variety of shared spaces for leisure and activities.

New resident Barry is eagerly anticipating starting his life at Neuadd Maldwyn. He has already met his neighbour who was visiting their apartment at the same time.

Said Barry: “I am really looking forward to moving into Neuadd Maldwyn. It will allow me to live independently again, without being reliant on my daughter.”

The 66 one-and-two-bedroom apartments located in the centre of Welshpool, were built by Anwyl Partnerships on behalf of ClwydAlyn, along with Powys County Council, supported by, Welsh Government and Powys Teaching Health Board.

Annette and Ray (pictured below) are looking forward to moving into their new apartment. Said Annette: “We’ve always admired the lovely building that is Neuadd Maldwyn – we even got married there!

“The apartments themselves look lovely with the added security of access to care onsite, should we need it.

“It’s a new chapter for us and one we’ll be making the most of!”

Reg and his wife Doreen are looking forward to celebrating their Blue Sapphire Wedding Anniversary, (65 yrs) in their new home. Said Reg: “We are delighted to be moving into our accommodation, so thoughtfully planned to meet our needs.

“Top marks to Powys County Council and ClwydAlyn for preserving this listed Grade II building!”

There is still time for potential residents to apply to the scheme; with some one- and two-bedroom apartments available for rental. Priority for the available homes has been given to residents from the Powys area, who are aged over 60 with assessed care or support needs. Ongoing housing management and ancillary services will be provided by ClwydAlyn. Powys County Council will take responsibility for on-site domiciliary care.

Neuadd Maldwyn is a recognisable local landmark in Welshpool and served as former council offices for many years. The Neo-Georgian Grade II listed buildings were completed in 1931 by prominent architects Sir Arnold Thornley and Frank Gately Briggs. Sir Arnold Thornley is best known for high-profile designs throughout the North West including The Mersey Docks and Harbour Board Building (one of Liverpool’s Three Graces) and the ‘Stormont’ Parliament Buildings in Belfast.

“The architecture and original features at Neuadd Maldwyn have ensured that this development is truly one of a kind.
“The conversion into apartments has been conducted to retain the building’s true character; it’s a truly stunning space which our residents are excited to move into.
“It’s been a joy to show the residents their new homes.”
