A remarkable resident of Plas Telford independent living community near Wrexham, has marked her milestone 100th birthday surrounded by family and friends, with a celebration as inspiring as her life story.

Katharina Morris, who celebrated her 100th birthday this week, was joined by loved ones from as far afield as the USA and Australia, plus friends and family from across the UK, for a heartwarming party at Plas Telford, where she has lived for ten-years.

Born in Ukraine in 1925, Katharina lost both of her parents in childhood and endured the hardships of war including temporary homelessness. Eventually, whilst in Germany, she met Elfyn Morris from Cefn Mawr in 1947. The couple married and settled in North Wales, where together they built a family and a future, overcoming adversity with determination and love.

Katharina, who remains incredibly active, enjoys a variety of hobbies from baking and making her own clothes, to challenging herself with sudoku puzzles and socialising with fellow residents. She particularly loves playing Rummikub with her family, keeping her mind and spirit sharp!

She designed and made the stunning blue and white dress, with matching waistcoat, which she wore for her 100th birthday celebration meal. And after eating lunch, changed into native dress from her home country Ukraine, to celebrate and honour her heritage.

Rather than receive birthday gifts, Katharina made the selfless request for donations to the charity Ukraine Relief, honouring the country she fled as a young woman following the Second World War.

“My wish for my birthday, was to give something back to the people of Ukraine, who are facing such hardships today. I know what it is like to be forced from your home. Hopefully these donations will help in some way.”

Celebrations included a special meal, live music, and a beautiful birthday cake topped with a fondant model of Katharina and her trusty sewing machine! Staff, residents and members of the local community were all keen to celebrate Katharina, whose warmth and resilience continue to inspire everyone around her.

“It’s a privilege to have Katharina as part of our community. She lives an incredibly full life and is an inspiration to us all. Her generosity in choosing to support Ukraine Relief, rather than receive gifts is just another example of her kind and giving nature.”

Katharina’s fundraising efforts have already raised almost £700 for her chosen charity, Ukraine Relief.
